The ABI does not sell insurance. We speak on behalf UK insurers. We provide consumers with general information on insurance and savings products and services. We promote best practice, transparency and high standards within the industry. As a forward-thinking organisation, we work with government, regulators and policymakers – both in the UK and internationally – to ensure the insurance industry meets the highest standards.
The ABI:
- has over 250 member companies, accounting for over 90% of the UK insurance market
- our members are major tax contributors, paying £12 billion to the government in 2013
- all our members agree to our compulsory codes of conduct
- is funded by members’ subscriptions
- was formed in 1985
The UK insurance market:
- contributes to society and the economy by helping people and businesses manage short-term and long-term risk
- is the largest in Europe and the third largest in the world
- is a major employer and wealth creator, employing around 314,000 people
- is an important source of investment in the economy, responsible for investments of £1.8 trillion in 2013 – that's 25% of the UK's total net worth
Our role is to:
- use our expertise and experience to contribute to public policy debates
- publish research reports and policy documents to contribute new ideas and inform conversation
- promote the highest standards of customer service
- support a competitive insurance industry
