Portfolio volatility has always been a major consideration for clients – and more so recently with the increasing number of risk-bound multi-asset funds.

These fund families provide an opportunity for advisers to outsource their investment management to professional fund managers. At the same time, they allow advisers to retain control of their client, their mandates, and the search for a suitable solution of their behalf.

The resulting focus on volatility has been an important step in defining and mitigating this risk for some or choosing to accept it for others.

This begs the question whether we really understand risk, how it applies to clients’ mandates and its impact on investment outcomes.
